Futura Pushing 35 knots

Starboard just dropped me this email, about the futura speedpotential. Nice one to read. I believe the Futura is as fast as the iSonic, last time I did check the shape and it looks fast to me. I know at least 2 happy speedsurfers that have did serious speed or personal records on the futura-series.

Starboard message:
Speed surfers will often own a serious collection of highly specialized gear,
allowing them to improve their personal records, one tweak at a time. But
what happens when you ask a PWA professional to strap on a GPS and start
rigging the 2011 Futura for top speed? We called Kevin Pritchard to find out.

  1. Indeed I have some good memoeries from teh various s-type's and futura's I could use the last years (thx to a deal with a now closed shop).

My first time going faster then 60km/u (32 knots) was on my futura 111 with a 6.7m² at 26/10/2008 on Horst.

  3. 34.95kn is pretty fast for the Falcon 131!!!! Damn, my fastest on such a board the iSonic 117 wide (80cm wide) was near 60km/h (32kn). Maybe I should push harder ;)

  4. I'm about to buy a futura 111-09, but I heard that the total volume of this board is less than 111 l, more like 105 l. And the -08 is more like 115 l. Is this true? I've read that the distributin of the volume has moved so is it more a feeling of volume changing or is it a true decrease in volume?

  5. Hi Carl,

A bit less volume is not that bad. Most volume disappeared in the nose, soo enough volume in the tail where you are standing. Also the double concave in the Futura should give a lot of stability.

As long as you have some speed (3-5kn) the bottom will generate enough lift. Only in total windsilence the 5 liter less can be felt.

    Cheers,
    Erik

  7. I have had two good sessions on the Futura 122 wood 2011.

Board planes very easily. For me as quite passive recreative windsurfer a pre. The severne reflex 7.8 is a very nice sail size on the board. Plenty of light wind potential, but with my 95+ kg enough room to use gusts up to 25 Kts for speeding on the Horster Sea. With a SL7 39 I could manage 33 Kts top and 30 Kts 500 mtr. Under good conditions with a SL7 37 or SO7 fin a 35 Kts is realistic. Maybe a pro may get an 38+ Kts out of this board.

93 futura 2011 I used only one time. Nice board for speed and jibing. With the last good gusts on a Wednesday afternoon I could manage to add another 0.1 km upon my avg. This board will be easily capable to go 40+ Kts. However I don't really understand why starboard don't have a smaller size for the light weight surfers around 60-75 kg. The Fu93 however is perfect for me as high wind board.
